Overview
Switzerland may seem relatively small as compared to other European nations but that certainly does not mean that it has less to offer. Rather, it has set itself apart from the rest of Europe – its unparalleled landscapes, peaceful environments and cosmopolitan cities – and has succeeded in becoming a tourist mecca that is at the same time not over-commercialised. And all this without forgoing the comforts of my home country Singapore; it is safe, clean, you can get around easily by public transport and there are no language barriers.

The best time to visit Switzerland depends on the purpose of your trip. Travelling to Switzerland during winter offers great seasonal activities and attractions such as Christmas markets, winter sports and ski resorts. April until May and September are considered Switzerland’s shoulder season, most of the ski resorts are closed by the end of April, and hiking trails will be more accessible. Summer is Switzerland’s high season as the weather is warmer and summer activities will then be available.
Switzerland is a Schengen area country. American and Canadian passport holders may enter Switzerland for up to 90 days for tourist or business purposes without a visa. However, visa-free travel only applies to stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. If you plan to stay in the Schengen area for a longer period of time, you will need a visa.
Switzerland is a perfect destination for families, with its safe and clean cities, numerous options for outdoor activities in the summer, many playgrounds, and theme trails like the Toggenburg Tone Trail with over 20 musical installations along the trail and water parks. In winter families can enjoy the Christmas markets and ski resorts.
Switzerland has one of the most efficient, reliable and safe transportation networks in Europe. In the larger cities, you can use buses, trams and sea buses. Trains are the best way to travel across Switzerland, trains are economical, punctual and comfortable. Train rides offer a scenic view of the mountains and lakes. Travellers can take advantage of the Swiss train passes especially if travelling as a family. Car rental is a great option to consider, note that there are car-free towns (Zermatt), car-free regions (most of the Jungfrau region) and there are no roads to most peaks, so you’ll have to change to a train or cable car at some point.
